Because it is three boys and A DOG

Our dog has a big swollen lump on his leg.

We contacted our veternarian to see what we should do. We are going to give him some medicine to see if it helps.

I really hope that the medicine works because I have been freaking out reading about our breed of dog, the Irish Wolfhound. Apparently, Osteocarcinoma (bone cancer) effects a lot of large dog breeds and Irish Wolfhounds have the highest rate of all.

It usually hits them around four or five years of age but they can get it at any time. The average lifespan of an Irish Wolfhound is normally 6-8 years but I am sure they can live longer.

This is what one of his other legs looks like for a comparison.

For once in my life I hope I am overreacting and it is nothing serious at all and will heal right up. Nobody likes to lose a pet and I really don't want my children to have to lose a pet they have had less than two years.

Yep, that medicine better work. I will keep you posted.

My Rottie had something like that once upon a time (he's been gone 7(?) years now). The Dr. lanced it and it was fine. Kind of a water on the knee thing- but for dogs.

I will tell you that he did die of cancer- and he was 8. Not that it helps... It's a chance you take with big dogs. Give him lots of lovies.
